About
A two-person studio in Montevideo
Loxben is a small software studio founded in 2020 in Montevideo, Uruguay. We do architecture reviews, build first versions of products, and embed as senior engineers on startup teams, mostly for companies in the United States. We work in TypeScript, Node.js, React and AWS, write our decisions down, and keep our working day on US Eastern hours. On the side, we build our own B2B tools for finance and DevOps teams, and what we learn on client work goes into them.

Loxben started in 2020 in Montevideo, Uruguay, as a one-person company for contract engineering. Rhay Parra had spent the previous decade building software for telecom, financial-services, health and media companies, and wanted to do that work for early-stage teams in the United States directly, rather than through an agency. The first years were client work, among it an early-stage research start-up and a K-12 education software company: mostly architecture and senior engineering in TypeScript on AWS.
In 2025 we started building our own products. The same problem kept showing up on client work and in our own operations: small companies paying enterprise prices for one feature, or doing the job in a spreadsheet because everything else was too expensive. Finance operations and API monitoring were the two areas where we knew the problem first-hand, so that's where we started. A second engineer joined later.
We're bootstrapped. Client work pays for the product work, and there are no investors, so there is no pressure to grow faster than the products earn it, and no reason to say yes to work we shouldn't take. We say no to fixed-price bids on undefined scope, to requests for "five developers by Monday", to rewrites that exist only to change frameworks, and to work outside the stack we know, where we would be learning on your budget.
Loxben was co-founded by Rhay Parra, a software architect and engineer who has built systems for telecom, financial-services, health and education companies since 2012. More about him at https://rhynl.io.
Values
What we hold to
- Say what's true, including about ourselves.
Product pages carry a real status and proposals list what we're leaving out, because trust is cheaper to keep than to rebuild.
- Fewer things, done properly.
Two people can't do everything, so we'd rather finish one product or one engagement than start three.
- Build what we'd be willing to maintain.
Code we hand over should be code we'd be happy to be on call for.
- Independence is worth protecting.
Being bootstrapped lets us choose the work and the pace, and we treat that as an asset rather than a constraint.
- Respect the client's money.
If a feature isn't worth building, or an existing tool already does the job, we say so before we bill for it.
- Remote should be invisible.
We work when our clients work and write things down for when they don't, so distance never shows up as a delay.
